How Body Skin Renews Itself: The 28-Day Cell Turnover Cycle
Body skin completely renews itself every 28 days. Knowing this cycle is why most active body lotions take 3–4 weeks to show results.
The Renewal Cycle
Cells form at the base of the epidermis and migrate to the surface, dying and flattening into the protective barrier. Around day 28, they shed.
Cycle slows with age — 28 days at 25, ~45 days at 45, ~60 days at 65.
Why Active Lotions Need 4 Weeks
Niacinamide, glycolic acid, retinol all influence the renewal process. The visible result — brighter, smoother skin — appears once one full cycle of new cells has reached the surface.
Quitting after 2 weeks ('it is not working') is the most common reason people fail with active body lotions.
How to Support Healthy Turnover
Gentle exfoliation 1–2x a week (mechanical or chemical). Daily moisturisation. Adequate protein and vitamin C in diet (both required for new cell formation).
Avoid over-exfoliating — more than 3x a week damages the barrier and slows healthy turnover.
As You Age
Add gentle chemical exfoliation (AHA body wash 1–2x/week) after 35. This compensates for the slowing renewal cycle and keeps skin looking refreshed.
