What it is
Keratin builds a plug at the mouth of the follicle, leaving fine rough bumps and a strawberry-skin look, most often on the upper arms, thighs and cheeks.
What causes it
Largely genetic and worse in dry weather. It is not caused by poor hygiene, and it cannot be scrubbed away — physical scrubs inflame it and make the redness worse.
What actually helps
Chemical exfoliation rather than friction: AHA to loosen the plug, BHA to clear the follicle, then urea to hold water in the skin. Expect texture change before you see the bumps go.
