Body lotion is water-based and lighter — absorbs quickly, good for daily use in humid conditions, and suits normal to slightly dry skin. Body butter is oil-rich and thicker — better for very dry, rough skin (especially elbows, knees, and heels) and for colder, drier climates. In Indian summer: lotion. In air-conditioning or winter: butter. You can also combine — lotion for most of the body, butter on extra-dry areas.

The best moment is right after showering, while skin is still slightly damp. Towel dry gently, then apply lotion or body butter so humectants and oils have a better-feeling base to work with.
