Body Wash for Fungal Infection: What to Use and What to Avoid
Fungal skin infections — tinea versicolor, tinea cruris, tinea corporis — are among the most common dermatological conditions in India. The combination of heat, humidity, sweating, and occlusive clothing creates optimal growing conditions for Malassezia and dermatophyte fungi. While antifungal medication (oral or topical) is required to treat an active infection, your body wash plays a critical supporting role: it either creates an environment fungi can exploit or one that actively discourages their growth.
What to Use
Ketoconazole body wash (2%): This is an antifungal ingredient — it directly kills the fungal cells responsible for tinea versicolor and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Available OTC in India as Nizoral. Use 3x weekly as part of active treatment.
Selenium sulfide shampoo used as body wash: Selsun Blue (selenium sulfide 2.5%) is highly effective against Malassezia when used as a body wash. Apply to trunk and chest, leave 5-10 minutes, rinse. Use weekly as maintenance after infection is cleared.
Tea tree oil body wash: Tea tree at 2-5% has antifungal properties against Malassezia and mild antibacterial activity. Good for prevention and as a supporting wash during treatment.
Low pH formulas: Fungi prefer alkaline environments. A body wash with pH 4.5-5.5 creates conditions less favourable for fungal growth.
What to Avoid
Sugar-rich body washes, heavy emollient formulas, and anything with significant oils (coconut oil, sweet almond oil) — fungi feed on lipids, and these ingredients create the nutrient environment that supports their growth.
Prevention Protocol
After treatment, use a tea tree or ketoconazole-based body wash once a week through monsoon season to prevent recurrence. Dry skin folds completely after showering. Change to fresh, dry clothing immediately — never sit in damp or sweaty clothing.
