Body Acne vs Folliculitis: How to Tell the Difference (And Why It Matters)
Both look like little bumps on the back, chest, or shoulders. But they have different causes — and the wrong treatment makes the other one worse.
Body Acne
Caused by clogged follicles + excess sebum + acne bacteria. Bumps can become inflamed (red, painful) or come to a head (whitehead).
Typical zones: upper back, chest, shoulders, jawline.
Folliculitis
Caused by bacterial or fungal infection of the follicle. Often follows shaving, tight clothing, sweat, or hot tubs.
Bumps are uniform, red-ringed, often itch rather than hurt. Can appear in clusters.
Why It Matters
Acne treatment (salicylic acid, retinol) helps acne but can irritate folliculitis. Folliculitis often needs antibacterial / antifungal treatment.
Misdiagnosing means the wrong product makes things worse for weeks.
How to Tell
Acne: variety in bump size, some come to a head, painful when pressed, in classic acne zones.
Folliculitis: uniform bumps, often itchy, often in tight-clothing or shaved zones, may have a hair visible at centre.
If unsure, see a dermatologist — a 10-minute consult saves weeks of wrong treatment.
