Body lotion is a European invention for a European climate. Formulated for cold, dry winters, the thick cream format was designed to add an occlusive barrier against cold air and heating systems.
Body oil is older and better suited to Indian skin in the Indian climate.
The Indian Climate Argument
India has a range of climates, but none of them are cold-European. Even North Indian winters — cold and dry by Indian standards — do not create the skin-stripping conditions of a European winter. The rest of the year, the climate ranges from moderately humid to intensely humid.
In humid conditions, thick body lotion sits on top of skin and creates an uncomfortable occlusive layer. Body oil absorbs completely — there is no surface residue, no stickiness in humidity, no uncomfortable film.
This is not a fragrance argument yet. It is a climate argument. Body oil is the right texture for Indian climate. The fragrance argument builds on top of this.
Why Oil Is the Superior Fragrance Carrier
Fragrance molecules are lipophilic — they are attracted to and soluble in oils, not water. This is why fragrance blends in an oil base and why the oldest fragrance tradition in the world (the Kannauj attar system) uses sandalwood oil as the base, not water or alcohol.
When fragrance is delivered in a body oil: - The fragrance molecules are held in a lipid matrix compatible with skin's own lipid barrier - Application to warm, damp skin after shower allows the oil — and the fragrance — to be absorbed into the skin's lipid layer - The reservoir sits below the skin surface and releases slowly as body temperature warms it
This mechanism produces 8+ hours of fragrance from a single morning application — not because the fragrance is concentrated, but because it is being released from within rather than evaporating from the surface.
The Ayurvedic Precedent
Abhyanga — the Ayurvedic practice of self-massage with warm fragrant oil — is one of the oldest documented body care practices in India, dating to classical Ayurvedic texts.
The specific ingredients used in traditional abhyanga — sesame oil as carrier, combined with sandalwood, vetiver, rose, and other aromatic herbs depending on constitutional type — mirror exactly what contemporary fragrance-led body oil achieves.
The Ayurvedic insight that fragrant oil absorbed into skin creates prolonged physical, neurological, and olfactory benefit has been confirmed by modern understanding of skin chemistry and aromachology.
The Post-Shower Window
The optimal moment for body oil application is the 60-second window immediately after showering. While skin is still warm and slightly damp: - Surface capillaries are dilated from warm water - The skin's natural moisture creates an emulsifying medium that helps oil distribute evenly - Body temperature is elevated, helping the oil and fragrance penetrate more deeply
Apply body oil in this window and then follow with lotion to seal. The result is a fragrance reservoir in the skin that releases consistently for the rest of the day.
This is the technical foundation of the fragrance-led body care approach: oil as carrier, warm damp skin as delivery mechanism, base-note ingredients as the fragrance that persists.
The Love Co is India's first fragrance-led body care brand — built around body oil as the primary fragrance vehicle, the way India's tradition always understood it.
