The abbreviations on fragrance bottles — EDP, EDT, EDC — aren't marketing categories. They're concentration labels that tell you exactly how strong and how long-lasting a fragrance will be. Once you understand them, choosing the right format for each situation becomes straightforward.
The Concentration Spectrum
Fragrance products sit on a spectrum from most to least concentrated: Parfum (Extrait) at 20–30% fragrance oil is the most intense and longest-lasting, typically found in niche or luxury formats. Eau de Parfum (EDP) at 15–20% is the sweet spot for everyday wear — intense enough to last a full day, light enough to be versatile. Eau de Toilette (EDT) at 5–15% is lighter in projection and typically lasts three to five hours, making it better for daytime use or warm weather. Eau de Cologne (EDC) at 2–5% is very light and fleeting. Body mist at 1–3% in a water base is the most diluted format, designed for liberal all-over application and refreshing top-ups.
Longevity: What to Actually Expect
EDP: six to twelve hours on most skin types. EDT: three to six hours. EDC: two to four hours. Body mist: one to three hours, designed to be reapplied. These are ranges — your skin type, body temperature, and the specific fragrance construction all affect the result. Oily skin tends to hold fragrance longer than dry skin because the natural oils slow evaporation. If your skin is dry, investing in an EDP over an EDT will almost always yield better all-day results.
When to Choose Each
For a full workday or an evening out, EDP is the practical choice — one application in the morning, still present by evening. For a lunch meeting, a gym bag refresh, or a warm afternoon, EDT or body mist is appropriate. Body mist specifically works well in Indian summers: the water-based formula feels cooling, the lighter concentration means you won't project heavily in a hot office, and you can reapply without layering on too much. Many fragrance lovers keep an EDP for morning application and a matching body mist for top-ups through the day.
Cost Per Wear
EDP bottles are typically more expensive per millilitre than EDT or body mist. But because you use less per application and get more hours of wear, the cost per day of wear often works out comparable or better. A 50ml EDP used correctly — two to three targeted sprays — lasts significantly longer bottle-to-bottle than a 100ml EDT applied liberally. Think about concentration before assuming a cheaper product is better value. The Love Co's fragrance range is designed around this logic — fine perfumery construction at an accessible Indian price point.
