What Are Fragrance Notes? Top, Heart, Base Explained Simply

The fragrance pyramid — top, heart, base notes — is not marketing jargon. It's a description of real chemistry. Here's what it means for what you smell and when.

H Hemang Jain 19 May 2026 2 min read

When you read a fragrance description — "top notes of bergamot and lemon, heart of rose and jasmine, base of sandalwood and vetiver" — you're reading a description of when you'll smell each ingredient, not just what's in the fragrance.

The fragrance pyramid is a description of evaporation rates, not a recipe.

Why Ingredients Evaporate at Different Rates

Every aromatic compound has a characteristic evaporation rate — a function of its molecular weight and boiling point.

Small molecules, low molecular weight: Evaporate quickly. These are your top notes — the first impression.

Medium molecules: Evaporate at moderate rates. These are your heart notes — the fragrance "body."

Large molecules, high molecular weight: Evaporate slowly or almost not at all. These are your base notes — the lasting foundation.

The fragrance you smell in the first 5 minutes is not the same fragrance you smell at hour 6. This is not a flaw. It's the design.

Top Notes

What they are: The most volatile aromatic compounds in the formula. Citrus (bergamot, lemon, grapefruit), green notes (cut grass, fresh leaves), light aldehydes.

When you smell them: First 15–30 minutes.

Their purpose: Creating a strong first impression. This is why most perfumes smell bright and fresh from the bottle — the top notes are what you smell immediately.

The catch: They're gone fastest. If you love how a fragrance smells at the counter, you're mostly smelling top notes. The fragrance you'll wear all day is mostly the heart and base.

In Indian fragrance context: Indian fragrance heritage is not primarily a top-note tradition. Attar-based fragrance jumps almost directly to heart and base — which is why attar seems "heavy" to noses trained on synthetic-dominant perfume. It's not heavy. It has no top note illusion.

Heart Notes

What they are: Mid-volatility compounds. Florals (rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang), spices (cinnamon, cardamom), soft herbs.

When you smell them: 30 minutes to 3–4 hours.

Their purpose: The "character" of the fragrance. Heart notes are what the fragrance is about. When someone says "it smells like rose" or "it smells like jasmine," they're usually smelling a heart note.

Kannauj rose absolute context: Genuine Kannauj rose absolute behaves as a heart-to-base note ingredient. Its high phenylethyl alcohol content is medium-weight — it lasts longer than typical florals. This is why Kannauj rose in a body oil outlasts synthetic "rose fragrance" by several hours.

Base Notes

What they are: The heaviest, least volatile compounds. Sandalwood, vetiver, oud, musks, resins, ambers.

When you smell them: 2 hours through the end of the day.

Their purpose: Fixation (slowing the evaporation of heart notes) and longevity (the fragrance impression that remains after everything else has lifted).

Mysore sandalwood context: Santalol is a sesquiterpene — large molecular weight, low volatility. It is the ideal base note. Once deposited in the skin (via body oil application), it releases for 8–12 hours. Nothing accelerates this.

Tamil Nadu vetiver context: Vetiver's khusimol is one of the least volatile aromatic compounds in commercial use. Applied to skin, it's present at 10 PM the same day as an 8 AM application.

Why the Pyramid Matters for Body Care

When building a fragrance-led body care system, the base notes are the most important ingredient choice.

Choosing a body oil with Mysore sandalwood as a primary ingredient means the base note — the lasting, grounding, skin-merging element — is embedded in the living skin layer from the moment of application.

The top notes will come and go. The base note stays.

Build your body care around the base.

The Love Co builds on base-note excellence: Mysore sandalwood and Tamil Nadu vetiver ensure the fragrance is still present 8+ hours after your morning ritual.

How long do The Love Co. fragrances actually last? ★ Most asked

Body mists wear light on dry skin, feel fuller when layered over the matching body lotion, and settle into a richer trail when the full four-step Cleanse Ritual is used. Longevity is a function of layering, not concentration.

Are The Love Co. products safe for sensitive skin? Patch-test

TLC products are designed for body skin and daily rituals, with ingredient lists printed on pack and product pages. Patch test on the inner arm for 48 hours if you have known fragrance sensitivities, and choose fragrance-light options if your skin is very reactive.

What is the Cleanse Ritual?

TLC's four-step body care system. Step 01: Body Wash deposits the base accord in the shower. Step 02: Body Lotion on damp skin within three minutes, locking heart notes into the lipid layer. Step 03: Body Mist reactivates and projects the scent. Step 04: Solid Perfume at pulse points, activated by body heat. Each step extends the one before it.
