A L'Occitane Shea Butter body lotion costs ₹3,500 for 250ml. It's a good product.
The shea butter comes from West Africa. The fragrance is a proprietary L'Occitane blend. The Provençal identity is marketing. The product is made in France and shipped here.
The Indian consumer pays: the product cost, the import duty (20–30%), the logistics, the brand premium, the retail markup.
Is there a case for international body care in India? Yes, for specific reasons. But that case is weaker than most international brand marketing assumes.
What International Brands Actually Offer
Formulation excellence: L'Occitane, Jo Malone, Molton Brown, Nécessaire — these brands have decades of formulation science and quality control. Their products are reliably excellent. This is a real benefit.
Brand narrative: The Provençal lavender story (L'Occitane), the British luxury heritage (Jo Malone, Molton Brown), the Brazilian sensory culture (Sol de Janeiro) — these are genuinely appealing stories.
Fragrance sophistication: Top-tier international brands work with the world's best fragrance houses (Givaudan, Firmenich, IFF). Their fragrance compositions are expertly executed.
Global recognition: For gifting, the brand name carries weight. A Jo Malone box communicates a specific status signal that an Indian brand name (currently) cannot match.
What International Brands Cannot Offer
Indian provenance: L'Occitane tells a story about Provence because Provence is where their lavender grows. They cannot tell the story of Kannauj rose, Mysore sandalwood, or Tamil Nadu vetiver — because that's not where their ingredients come from.
Indian climate performance: International body care formulations are calibrated for European or North American skin and climate. Heavy butters and creams that work beautifully in Paris winters feel congesting in Mumbai June.
Value at Indian price points: A 250ml L'Occitane body lotion at ₹3,500 is a reasonable price in Europe. In India, after import costs, it's significantly overpriced relative to the formulation content. You're paying substantially for logistics and brand equity.
Freshness: International products shipped to India have gone through a supply chain that takes weeks to months. A premium fragrance-led body care product manufactured in India and shipped directly is fresher — and freshness matters for fragrance quality.
The India-Origin Advantage
There is a category of thing that only Indian brands can claim, which no international brand can buy or replicate:
Kannauj rose, Mysore sandalwood, Tamil Nadu vetiver — traceable to specific regions, specific growing conditions, specific distillation traditions. When L'Occitane uses Bulgarian rose, they can claim Bulgarian provenance. When The Love Co uses Kannauj rose, they can claim the only rose origin that French perfumers have always sourced from and never credited.
This isn't an argument against international brands. It's an argument that the premium you pay for international brands in India has a specific value: brand recognition and formulation heritage. But the ingredient story — the geographic, historical, specific story — cannot be purchased by an international brand. It's India's.
The Honest Comparison
For gifting to someone who will recognise the brand name: International luxury brands may be worth the premium.
For your own daily body care: Indian fragrance-led body care built on traceable ingredients outperforms most international options for Indian skin in Indian climate, at significantly lower cost.
For the fragrance experience: Same ingredients (Kannauj rose, Mysore sandalwood, Tamil Nadu vetiver) used in a well-formulated Indian product will match or exceed the olfactory performance of international brands using the same raw materials — because the Indian brand isn't paying import logistics on the ingredients it uses.
Sol de Janeiro's story is Brazil's. L'Occitane's story is Provence's.
India's fragrance story belongs to India.
Only Indian brands can tell it.
The Love Co is India's first fragrance-led body care brand — built on the same ingredients that supply the world's great perfume houses, told from India for the first time.
