The shelf says "body mist." The next bottle over says "body spray." The label on the third one calls itself a "fragrance mist." These are not interchangeable, and the difference matters more than most marketing copy will admit.
This is the honest answer – written by a fragrance-led brand that makes body mists, not body sprays, and won't pretend the two are the same thing.
The one-line answer
Body mist is a low-concentration fragrance (typically 1-3% fragrance oil) in a water-based or water-and-alcohol carrier, designed for soft, all-over scent and skin conditioning.
Body spray is a higher-concentration fragrance (typically 3-8%) usually in a heavy alcohol or aerosol carrier, often with bacteriostatic or deodorising claims, designed for stronger projection and a more deodorant-like role.
Both go on the body. They are not the same product.
The full comparison table
| Attribute | Body Mist | Body Spray |
|---|---|---|
| Fragrance concentration | 1-3% | 3-8% |
| Carrier | Water + minimal/no alcohol, often emollient | High alcohol or aerosol propellant |
| Longevity on skin | 2-4 hours (longer when layered) | 3-6 hours (often with sharper drop-off) |
| Projection | Soft, intimate | Loud, projects across a room |
| Skin feel | Hydrating, can include glycerin/aloe | Drying, alcohol-forward |
| Typical claim | Fragrance + skin conditioning | Fragrance + deodorising / antibacterial |
| Best for | Daily layering, post-shower, refresh | Gym, post-workout, deodorant replacement |
| Price band (India) | ₹400-₹1,200 for 150 ml | ₹150-₹500 for 150 ml |
Why people confuse them
Two reasons. First, marketing. Many mass-market brands use "mist" and "spray" interchangeably on packaging because the average shopper doesn't differentiate. Second, format overlap. A body mist in a fine-spray bottle and a body spray in a non-aerosol pump can look identical on shelf.
The label tells you what it is. Look for fragrance concentration on the back panel (sometimes listed as "parfum %" or by ingredient order) and the carrier – aqua-led ingredient lists are mists, alcohol-led ingredient lists are sprays.
When to choose body mist
Body mist is the right choice when:
- You want an everyday, layerable fragrance you can wear to office, college or a casual dinner
- You have sensitive or dry skin and don't want alcohol on it
- You're building a fragrance ritual – mist on top of a matching body lotion
- You want something subtle that doesn't announce itself in a meeting room
- You're in a humid climate where lighter compositions actually breathe better on skin
Body mist is what most people in India actually want – they just don't always know to ask for it by name.
When to choose body spray
Body spray is the right choice when:
- You want something to use post-gym as a quick refresh
- You want stronger projection for a few hours
- You're treating it as a deodorant-plus-fragrance combo
- Budget is the priority and you don't mind the alcohol-forward feel
Body sprays earn their keep in active, sweaty contexts. They are not generally a good "all-day office fragrance" choice in Indian summer because the alcohol-forward base evaporates quickly and the projection that drew you in becomes noise by mid-morning.
The honest TLC answer
TLC body mists are body mists, not body sprays. We won't dress them up as something they aren't.
Our compositions sit at the higher end of the mist concentration range, in low-alcohol, emollient-rich bases. They are designed to layer with our body lotions and body washes – not to replace your deodorant. If you want a 4-second blast that fills a gym locker room, a body spray is a better fit. If you want a fragrance you can wear from morning meeting to evening dinner without it feeling loud or drying, a TLC body mist is built for that.
This is also why our women's body mist range and men's body mist range sit at the prices they do. Lower-alcohol, emollient bases with skin-care ingredients cost more to formulate than the standard alcohol-water-fragrance ratio.
What about "fragrance mist" and "perfume mist"?
These are usually mists positioned slightly upmarket – the same 1-3% concentration but with finer fragrance compositions and sometimes a slightly higher alcohol content for projection. Functionally they are body mists. The label is a marketing choice.
For the fragrance hierarchy from mist all the way to parfum, our breakdown of body mist vs perfume is the natural next read.
Application: same body, different technique
Body mist: spray 15-20 cm from skin in sweeping motion across chest, inner arms, neck. Best layered over a body lotion. Will fade unless layered.
Body spray: hold further (25-30 cm), one quick burst is enough, target torso and underarms. Don't layer with lotion – the alcohol disrupts the lotion. Don't use as your only fragrance for a long event – the projection is intentional and gets heavy.

Frequently asked questions
Is body mist or body spray better for daily wear?
Body mist for most people. Lower concentration means it's appropriate for office, transit and indoor settings without overwhelming the room. Body spray is better suited to short bursts post-workout.
Can body mist replace deodorant?
No. Body mist is a fragrance, not an antiperspirant or antibacterial. Body spray sometimes claims a bacteriostatic role but a dedicated deodorant or antiperspirant does the job better. Use deodorant for sweat control, mist for fragrance.
Why is body mist usually more expensive than body spray?
Lower-alcohol, emollient bases with skin-care ingredients (glycerin, aloe, panthenol) cost more to formulate than alcohol-water-fragrance. You're paying for the carrier, not just the scent.Does body mist last longer than body spray?
Not on its own – body spray's higher concentration usually projects longer. But body mist layered over a matching body lotion can outlast a body spray by hours because the lotion creates a slow-release base.
Are TLC body mists actually body mists or body sprays?
Body mists. We sit at 2-3% fragrance concentration in low-alcohol, emollient bases – designed for layering, not for projection. We don't use the body spray label.
