Keratosis Pilaris Treatment for Indian Skin: The Complete Guide
Keratosis pilaris — the rough, bumpy texture most commonly on the upper arms and thighs — affects an estimated 40% of the population globally and is one of the most searched skin concerns in India. On Indian skin, it presents differently from how it looks in textbooks: instead of red bumps, you typically see dark brown or grey bumps, often with a ring of darker pigmentation around each follicle. This is because our melanin responds to the low-grade inflammation in each clogged follicle by producing extra pigment.
What Causes Keratosis Pilaris
KP is a genetic condition where keratin — the structural protein in skin — overproduces and forms plugs inside hair follicles. The plugs push up through the skin surface, creating the characteristic rough texture. KP is not acne, not a hygiene issue, and cannot be scrubbed away permanently — but it can be significantly improved and kept smooth with the right routine.
The Ingredient Protocol That Works
Urea (10-20%): The most clinically proven ingredient for KP. Urea is a keratolytic — it dissolves the excess keratin that forms the plugs. At 10%, it smooths texture. At 20%, it treats stubborn, long-standing KP. Apply urea body lotion daily to affected areas.
Glycolic acid body wash: Use an AHA body wash (glycolic or lactic acid, 5-10%) on affected areas during your shower. This removes the surface dead skin cell buildup that makes KP more visible and helps the urea lotion penetrate more effectively.
Niacinamide for the pigmentation: For Indian skin with dark KP bumps, add niacinamide (5-10%) to your lotion. This addresses the hyperpigmentation that standard KP treatments ignore entirely — giving you smoother texture AND more even tone.
Lactic acid (12%): More hydrating than glycolic acid, making it better for the arms where KP often coexists with dryness.
What Doesn't Work
Physical scrubs and loofahs — these create micro-inflammation that worsens the pigmentation response in Indian skin. Chemical exfoliation is significantly more effective and less traumatic.
Consistency is non-negotiable: 6-8 weeks of daily urea + weekly AHA to see significant improvement. Most people see their KP return within weeks of stopping — maintenance is permanent.
