Glycolic Acid Body Wash: The Complete Guide for Indian Skin
Glycolic acid is the most studied AHA in skincare. With the smallest molecular size of all alpha-hydroxy acids, it penetrates the deepest and delivers the most consistent exfoliation results. In a body wash, it provides the even, chemical exfoliation that physical scrubbing can't match — particularly valuable for Indian skin dealing with keratosis pilaris, dark spots, rough shins, and overall dull skin texture.
What Glycolic Acid Does in a Body Wash
Glycolic acid works by dissolving the bonds (desmosomes) between dead skin cells at the surface of the stratum corneum. Rather than physically abrading them away, it releases them from their adhesion so they shed naturally. The result is a thinner, smoother surface layer of fresh skin cells — better light reflection, better product absorption, and visible improvement in texture.
In a rinse-off body wash at 5-10%, glycolic acid has 60-90 seconds of contact time. This is sufficient to deliver meaningful exfoliation when used consistently, as the cumulative effect builds over days and weeks.
Who Benefits Most from Glycolic Acid Body Wash
KP: Glycolic acid dissolves the keratin plugs at follicle openings that create the characteristic bumps. 4-6 weeks of daily use produces significant textural improvement.
Dark spots and PIH on the body: By accelerating surface cell turnover, glycolic acid brings the pigmented cells to the surface and sheds them faster than natural cell turnover allows.
Dull, rough shins and arms: These areas accumulate dead skin faster than others. Glycolic acid body wash prevents the buildup.
How to Use
Apply after wetting skin and initial cleansing. Massage in, leave for 60-90 seconds, rinse thoroughly. Use 3-4x per week. Don't use daily until your skin has adjusted (first 2 weeks). Always follow with rich body lotion on damp skin — glycolic acid increases TEWL (transepidermal water loss) and skin needs compensatory hydration.
Important: glycolic acid body wash on freshly shaved or waxed skin will sting. Wait 24-48 hours post hair removal before using.
