TL;DR: If a gentle everyday acid wash has plateaued on stubborn KP, a high-strength 5% AHA + 1% BHA cleanser can restart progress, but only for skin already conditioned to acids, used carefully and with SPF.
When "gentle" has done all it can
Keratosis pilaris is caused by keratin building up around hair follicles, producing the rough, bumpy texture often called strawberry skin. A gentle, everyday AHA BHA wash keeps that buildup in check for many people. But some KP is genuinely stubborn: the bumps on the backs of arms, thighs or back stay rough no matter how consistent you are. When a lower-strength acid has been used correctly for weeks and texture has clearly stopped improving, that plateau is the signal that a higher concentration may be worth considering.
Stepping up is not about being harsher for its own sake. It is about giving well-conditioned skin a stronger dose of the same chemistry it already tolerates.
How it works on body skin
Body skin on the limbs and back is thicker than facial skin, which is part of why KP holds on there. AHAs (here, glycolic and lactic acid) work on the surface, loosening the bonds between dead skin cells so they shed more evenly. BHA (salicylic acid) is oil-soluble, so it can travel into the follicle itself, where the keratin plug sits. A 5% AHA + 1% BHA cleanser combines both routes at a higher strength than an everyday formula, which is why it is positioned for stubborn cases rather than as a starting point. In a wash-off format, the acids do their work during contact time, then rinse away.
What to expect
Weeks 1–2: Skin is adjusting to a stronger dose. Mild tingling during use, slight dryness or a feeling of tightness afterwards can be normal. Texture may not have changed yet. Higher strength means a higher chance of irritation, so this is the window to go slow.
Weeks 3–4: Many people start to notice smoother patches and fewer rough bumps as cell turnover steadies. If skin feels comfortable, this is when you can consider using it slightly more often.
Weeks 4–6: This is a realistic horizon for visible change on stubborn KP. Results vary between people, and KP is managed rather than cured, consistency keeps it in check, and stopping usually lets texture return over time.
How to use it correctly
Start at 3–4 times a week, not daily. In the shower, apply to damp skin, lather over the affected areas, and leave the lather on for 60–90 seconds so the acids have contact time, then rinse thoroughly. Build up frequency only if skin stays comfortable; experienced skin can work toward daily use over time. Because acids increase sun sensitivity, daily SPF on exposed areas is essential at this strength. Always patch-test first, and only step up to this concentration from a gentler acid you already tolerate, not from nothing.
Who should use it
This is for skin already used to active exfoliation that has plateaued on a lower-strength product. It is not a first step. If you have never used acids, are dealing with sensitive, broken, irritated or sunburned skin, or your KP is mild and well-managed already, this concentration is more than you need and raises the risk of over-exfoliation. When in doubt, stay on a gentler formula or speak to a dermatologist.
