What Does Niacinamide Do for Dark Spots on Your Body?

active-ingredientsBy The Love CoJun 15, 20262 min read

TL;DR: Niacinamide blocks the transfer of pigment from melanin-producing cells to skin cells — fading dark spots, bacne marks, and underarm darkness over 8–12 weeks.

What It Is

Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3. It is water-soluble, stable across a wide pH range, and well-tolerated by almost all skin types — including sensitive skin. Unlike many brightening ingredients, it does not exfoliate. It works upstream, at the pigment-transfer stage.

How It Works on Body Skin

Hyperpigmentation on the body — bacne marks, underarm darkness, inner thigh discolouration — is almost always post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). An injury or inflammation triggers melanocytes to overproduce melanin. That melanin then transfers into surrounding keratinocytes (skin cells), creating the dark mark you see. Niacinamide at 4–5% concentration specifically inhibits that transfer — a process called melanosome transfer inhibition. It does not bleach skin. It interrupts an overactive biological signal. Body skin responds well to niacinamide because PIH on the body tends to be shallower than deep dermal pigmentation.

What to Expect

Weeks 1–4: No visible change yet. Niacinamide is working at the cellular level. Weeks 4–8: Existing marks begin to look less intense. New marks fade faster than they would untreated. Weeks 8–12: Significant reduction in PIH visible, especially on lighter bacne marks. Stubborn dark spots on knees and elbows take longer — up to 16 weeks.

How to Use It Correctly

Apply to clean, damp skin. For bacne marks, use a product that combines niacinamide with a gentle exfoliant — the exfoliant removes dead skin so niacinamide can reach the pigment layer. Use daily. There is no meaningful benefit to using it twice daily on the body. Niacinamide is compatible with AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, and retinol — no interactions to worry about.

Who It's For

Anyone with PIH from old acne, friction marks, or inflammatory skin conditions. Safe during pregnancy. Suitable for all skin tones — particularly beneficial for deeper skin tones where PIH tends to be more pronounced and persistent.

The TLC Pick

The Bacne Warrior Acne-Fighting Body Spray pairs niacinamide with 2% salicylic acid — treating active breakouts and the marks they leave behind in one step.
