Glycolic Acid for Body: The Smallest AHA, the Biggest Reach

Glycolic Acid for Body: The Smallest AHA, the Biggest Reach

Glycolic acid is the smallest-molecule AHA, which means the deepest penetration and the fastest results on body skin. Derived from sugar cane, it resurfaces dullness, fades post-acne marks, smooths strawberry legs and KP, and brightens tan lines. For Indian body care, it is the resurfacing workhorse — used correctly, it rewrites skin texture within weeks.

What is Glycolic Acid?

Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) with the smallest molecular weight in its family (76 Da). That small size is why it penetrates further into the stratum corneum than lactic, mandelic or malic acids. It dissolves the desmosomal bonds holding dead skin cells together, revealing fresher skin underneath and triggering mild collagen stimulation in deeper layers.

Effective range for body use is 5 to 15 percent, at a pH of 3.5 to 4.0. Above 20 percent it becomes peel territory and should only be used under dermatological supervision.

Why it matters for Indian body care

Indian body skin carries a distinct set of concerns — post-acne marks on back and chest, uneven tan lines, keratosis pilaris on upper arms and thighs, pigmentation after waxing, and dullness from hard water. Glycolic addresses all of these because they share one root: slow or faulty cell turnover producing thick, uneven, pigmented skin.

But Indian skin also pigments easily in response to irritation. That is why formulation and frequency matter more here than in lighter skin populations. A well-buffered glycolic at 8-10 percent used two to three times weekly delivers results without the dark-mark backlash.

How TLC uses Glycolic Acid

In our targeted body exfoliation range we formulate glycolic at 10 percent with a pH buffered to 3.8, paired with Centella Asiatica, gluconolactone and glycerin for irritation control. This is exfoliation without the sting.

How to use / best practices

  • Apply at night on clean, dry body skin — start twice a week, build to alternate nights.
  • Target specific zones: back, upper arms, thighs, shins, dcolletage.
  • Always follow with a ceramide cream to reinforce the barrier.
  • Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ on exposed body skin the next day is non-negotiable.
  • Do not stack with retinol on the same night — alternate evenings.
  • Avoid immediately post-wax, post-shave or on sunburnt skin.

Who should use (and who should skip)

  • Use: dull, KP-prone, post-acne-marked, tan-lined, ingrown-prone body skin.
  • Skip: active eczema, rosacea-prone patches, extremely reactive sensitive skin — try PHAs instead.

Frequently asked questions

How long until glycolic clears back acne marks?

Texture improvement in 2-3 weeks. Visible pigment fade in 6-12 weeks of consistent use.

Can I use glycolic on underarms?

Yes, at lower strengths (5-8 percent), on a clean, non-shaved day. It fades underarm pigmentation over 6-10 weeks.

Does glycolic work on keratosis pilaris?

Yes — it is the most effective topical for KP when paired with moisturisation. See our body care guide for the full protocol.

Is glycolic safe during pregnancy?

Generally considered safe at cosmetic percentages, but always confirm with your obstetrician. PHA is an even safer alternative during pregnancy.
