Body Lotion for Men in India: Why Men Need It and What to Choose
Body lotion is one of the most underprescribed products in Indian men's grooming. The cultural narrative around men's skincare has historically focused on face and hair — body moisturising has been seen as unnecessary or feminine. This is changing, and for good reason: men's skin, particularly body skin, is under as much environmental stress as women's, and the consequences of ignoring it — rough skin, chronic dryness, back acne, keratosis pilaris — are entirely avoidable.
Why Men's Body Skin Has Different Needs
Men's skin is biologically different from women's in ways relevant to body care. It's approximately 25% thicker, has higher sebum production, and loses moisture faster in cold conditions. Testosterone drives higher collagen density in younger men but also drives the sebum production that leads to body acne. Men in India also tend to shower more frequently (often 2x daily in summer), which increases barrier disruption if not compensated with moisturising.
What to Look for in a Men's Body Lotion
Lightweight, fast-absorbing: The main reason men don't moisturise is texture aversion — nobody wants to feel greasy. Gel-lotions and fluid emulsions with fast dry-down are the solution. Apply post-shower and you're dressed in 2 minutes.
Non-greasy actives: Niacinamide (for back and chest acne), hyaluronic acid (for hydration), and urea (for rough arms and elbows) in a lightweight base.
Masculine or neutral fragrance: Body lotion's fragrance is an extension of grooming. Woody, aquatic, and clean musk fragrance profiles work well in body lotion for men — they complement cologne rather than clashing.
