The 7 Fragrance Families Every Indian Should Know
Every perfume in the world fits into one of seven fragrance families. Knowing them lets you shop fragrance the way you shop wine — by category, not by guesswork.
Floral
Built around flower notes — rose, jasmine, mogra, tuberose. The largest family and the most universally appealing. Suits day wear, office, college.
Woody
Centred on tree-derived notes — sandalwood, cedar, vetiver. Warm, grounding, often unisex. Suits evening and cooler weather.
Oriental
Warm, spicy, often resinous — amber, vanilla, oud, frankincense. Heavier and more sensual. Suits winter, evenings, occasion wear.
Fresh / Aquatic
Citrus, marine, green notes — bergamot, sea salt, basil, mint. Light, energising, ideal for Indian summer and humid monsoon.
Gourmand
Edible notes — vanilla, chocolate, caramel, coffee, coconut. Comforting and warm. Best in cooler months.
Fougère
Lavender, oakmoss, coumarin — the classical 'masculine' family, but increasingly worn by everyone. Crisp and herbaceous.
Chypre
Bergamot top, oakmoss base — sophisticated, mossy, slightly bitter. Less common in body mists but iconic in fine perfumery.
