Most body mists remain good for roughly three years unopened, and 12–18 months once opened. Those are working expectations, not guarantees — real shelf life depends almost entirely on how the bottle has been stored.
There are two separate clocks. The first starts at manufacture and runs while the bottle is sealed. The second starts the moment you first spray it, because from then on air enters the bottle with every use and oxidation begins in earnest.
An alcohol-based mist has one real advantage here: at this alcohol level the formula is effectively self-preserving, so microbial spoilage is not the concern. What degrades is the fragrance itself.

What actually goes wrong
Fragrance degradation is oxidation. Oxygen reacts with the fragrance molecules and changes them into different molecules, which smell different.
It does not happen evenly. The lightest, most volatile materials — citrus especially, and delicate florals — oxidise first and most dramatically. This is why a turned fragrance so often smells sharp, sour or faintly metallic at the opening while the base still smells more or less correct. The top of the pyramid has degraded and the bottom has not.
Heat accelerates every chemical reaction, including this one. Light, particularly UV, supplies energy directly to the process. Air supplies the oxygen. Storage is simply the practice of limiting all three.
It is also why there are UV filters in the formula — avobenzone and octyl methoxycinnamate are there to shield the fragrance oils from light while the bottle sits on a shelf. They help. They do not make the bottle immortal.
The three signs it has gone
Smell. The reliable test, and the only one that really matters. A turned fragrance reads sour, sharp, metallic or faintly like nail varnish at the opening. If the first two seconds are unpleasant in a way they never used to be, it has oxidised.
Colour. A noticeable darkening — pale to amber, or amber to brown — indicates oxidation. Some deepening over time is normal, particularly in fragrances with heavy naturals. A dramatic change is not.
Clarity. Cloudiness, visible sediment or separation means the solution has destabilised. This is uncommon in a well-made alcohol-based mist and is a clear signal to stop.
An expired mist is rarely a safety problem — it is a quality problem. But do not spray a turned fragrance onto reactive or broken skin, because oxidised fragrance materials are more likely to irritate than fresh ones.
How to store it properly
Not in the bathroom. This is the single most common storage mistake in India and it combines all three enemies. Every hot shower fills the room with steam and swings the temperature; the window supplies light. A bathroom shelf will age a fragrance faster than anything else you do to it.
A drawer, a cupboard, or the original box. Cool, dark and stable. The box exists for exactly this reason and throwing it away is throwing away the storage solution.
Upright, cap on. Reduces evaporation through the sprayer and stops the mechanism drying out.
Not in a car. An Indian glovebox in May is an oven. It will cook a fragrance in a single season.
Buy the size you will finish. A 150ml bottle you use daily is better value than a 250ml you will still be half-way through in two years — by then the second half is not the fragrance you bought.
