Urea in Body Lotion: The Underrated Ingredient for Rough and Dry Indian Skin
Urea is one of the most clinically effective ingredients in body care — and one of the least glamorous. It doesn't trend on Instagram. It's not new or exotic. But for rough, thickened, chronically dry body skin, no other ingredient performs as consistently as urea. Dermatologists have prescribed it for over 50 years, and the evidence base is among the strongest in topical skincare.
What Urea Does
Urea has two mechanisms depending on concentration:
At 5-10% (humectant mode): Urea binds and retains water in the stratum corneum, functioning as an extremely effective humectant. More effective than glycerin at equivalent concentrations for dry skin relief.
At 10-40% (keratolytic mode): At higher concentrations, urea breaks down the peptide bonds in excess keratin — the thickened skin protein that causes roughness, KP bumps, and cracked heels. This is the mechanism that makes urea uniquely effective for conditions that other moisturisers don't touch.
Choosing the Right Concentration
5% urea lotion: Daily moisturiser for dry skin prone to roughness. Safe for large body areas including children.
10% urea lotion: Standard treatment for KP, rough shins, rough arms, and moderately dry skin. Use daily.
20% urea lotion: For stubborn KP, thick rough patches, and heel fissures. Use daily on problem areas.
40% urea cream: For cracked heels and very thickened skin. Use as a targeted treatment 2-3x weekly.
What to Expect
At 10%, visible softening of rough skin in 5-7 days. KP improvement (smoother texture) in 3-4 weeks. Cracked heels with 20%+ urea: significant improvement in 7-10 days with the overnight socks method.
Urea has a slight smell (chemical/medicinal). This is normal and dissipates within minutes of application. Fragrance-containing formulas mask this effectively.
