Why does fragrance fade at all?
Fragrance fades because it evaporates, and different molecules evaporate at different speeds. That is the entire mechanism.
A perfumer builds a fragrance in three tiers precisely because of this. Top notes — citrus, pear, bergamot, whipped sugar — are small, light molecules that lift off skin within 5–10 minutes. Heart notes are mid-weight and carry hours one to three. Base notes — amber, oud, sandalwood, patchouli, musk, oakmoss — are heavy, slow, and stubborn, and they are the only reason anything is still there at hour six.
So when someone says a fragrance 'didn't last', what usually happened is that they smelled the top notes in the store, bought that, and were disappointed when hour two smelled like something else entirely. The fragrance did not fail. They bought the wrong ten minutes.
What makes Indian conditions harder?
Three variables, and all three run against fragrance at once.
Humidity. Above 70% relative humidity, the air is already close to saturated. Fragrance molecules that would otherwise sit in a thin layer on warm skin lift and disperse instead. This is why the same mist behaves completely differently in Delhi in May and Mumbai in July.
Heat. Warmth accelerates evaporation across every tier at once. It makes a fragrance project harder in the first twenty minutes and disappear sooner overall — loud and short, instead of quiet and long.
Showering twice a day. This is the one nobody counts. Every shower with a stripping, high-foam wash removes the skin's own lipid layer. Fragrance needs oil to bind to. Skin that has been degreased twice a day has almost nothing left to offer it.

Not all advice is equal. These are ordered by measured impact, largest first.

Why layering works, mechanically
Layering is not a marketing idea. It is a fixative strategy.
In fine perfumery, a fixative is a material that slows the evaporation of everything around it — traditionally resins, mosses and heavy woods. Oakmoss and fir resin do this job in the base of Fall in Love. Sandalwood does it in Japanese Cherry Blossom and Warm Vanilla.
When you apply a body lotion first, you are adding an external fixative layer. The emollients sit on the skin surface and give the fragrance oils something to dissolve into and cling to, instead of sitting exposed on dry skin where warm air can take them.
Matching the fragrance world matters because the lotion carries the same fragrance oils. You are not just slowing evaporation — you are reinforcing the same pyramid from underneath. That is why an in-world pairing reaches 8–12 hours and a mismatched one does not.
What does not work
Some of the most repeated advice is either useless or actively harmful.
Rubbing your wrists together. The friction generates heat and physically breaks up the top notes. It makes a fragrance open faster and finish sooner. Spray and let it dry.
Spraying more. Beyond about six sprays you are increasing projection in the first half hour, not extending the tail. The tail is set by the base notes, and no amount of extra volume changes their evaporation rate.
Spraying into the air and walking through it. Most of it lands on the floor. This is a cinema move, not a fragrance move.
Keeping it in the bathroom. The most common storage mistake in India. Steam, temperature swings and light degrade fragrance oils. A drawer in a cool room will meaningfully extend the life of the bottle.
