Body Scrub Routine for India: How to Exfoliate Without Damaging Your Skin
Most people either over-exfoliate their body (daily physical scrubbing that damages the barrier) or under-exfoliate (never exfoliating at all, leading to dull, rough skin with impaired product absorption). The right body exfoliation routine is specific to skin type, product type, and season — and it makes a visible difference in how body skin looks and feels within 2-3 weeks.
Physical vs. Chemical Exfoliation
Physical scrubs (salt scrubs, sugar scrubs, walnut shells, microbead replacements) work by mechanically removing dead skin cells through abrasion. The risk: uneven pressure means some areas get over-exfoliated while others are untouched. In Indian skin, aggressive physical exfoliation triggers melanin response — you can worsen the dark marks you're trying to fix.
Chemical exfoliation (AHA body wash, BHA body wash, exfoliating lotions) works uniformly across all skin. AHAs (glycolic, lactic acid) dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to shed evenly. BHA (salicylic acid) goes deeper into the follicle. Chemical exfoliation is significantly more effective and safer for Indian skin tones.
The Right Frequency
AHA body wash: 3-4 times per week (not daily — gives the barrier time to recover)
Physical scrub: Maximum 1-2 times per week with gentle pressure
Chemical exfoliating lotion (applied post-shower): 2-3 times per week
Season-Specific Adjustments
In summer: increase to 4x weekly (sweat + sebum + sunscreen buildup demands more exfoliation). In winter: reduce to 2x weekly (barrier is more fragile in cold dry air). In monsoon: focus on antibacterial body wash rather than exfoliation to prevent disturbing already-reactive skin.
The Sequence
Exfoliate in the shower, not before. Apply exfoliating body wash on clean (pre-washed) skin, massage for 30-60 seconds, leave for 60 seconds, rinse. Follow immediately with rich body lotion post-shower.
